Brushing up on my accent

                      This is England.

My initial feelings when I returned home were not the nostalgic home warmth and happiness I was expecting; I felt strangely out of place, and confused about the lack of bicycles/why we were driving on the left.

 

However, Nabil reassured me this 'disengagement from my original culture' was pretty normal. Northern Europe is essentially all the same (?), so after twenty four hours, a visit to Pizza Express, and some familiar faces.. life was peachy!

Going back to Great Britain felt like I was returning to an 'in-group'.

I could read signs!
And eavesdrop!
And pay in pounds!

WHAT THE DAM DOES 'GEZELLIG' MEAN?

 

My favourite Dutch word cannot be instantly translated to an English term.

'Gezellig' [pronounced: her-zel-lig], means a warm and cosy, fun atmosphere. Dutchies explain its not cosy like Christmas around a log fire, buts it not a fun, lively atmosphere like a theme park or music festival. They give the example of a dinner party, or pre-drinks with your close pals. Its easy to understand, but there is no instant translation.
