A Foreign Fortnight

The week in pictures

This past week has been as crackers as the first. Although I’m Dutch now (I have a bicycle), the language course is becoming increasingly more impossible. Families, fruits, and how to order an ‘Appeltaart’ in Dutch were fleeting features, and we’ve moved quickly onto ‘By the Doctors’ and ‘In the Bicycle Repair Shop’– both are as useful as they are challenging. The previous topics I attempted to put into practice as much as possible. This led to discoveries about taxi driver’s parents and siblings (ASL of all mentioned), and buying copious amounts of kaas and komkommers from the supermarket (cheese and cucumbers; my two favourite Dutch words so far).
RotterSLAM w/ RotterFAM
Holland is a happy land due to the sunshine that is littering the streets and skylines. This, and because my wonky leg has made slight progress, led me to further exploration of Rotterdam’s city centre. Additionally, the visit of Robert Whelan, who wisely invested four full days of his time to experience the city of dreams/ports, enabled me to venture. The compulsory slam on Friday night happened to involved Raaab’s international friends, which was pleasant. It also involved a range of Dutch beer and a little bicycle topple into the floor. Don’t tell Mum. Adding to these pleasantries we pancake-d one morning for breakfast, and IMAX-ed The Dark Knight Rises.. a second session with Batman and Bane for the both of us. Visits to Berlin feat. Animal Collective were booked too. Happy land Holland indeed!
What the DAM (The phrase I shouted outside Rotterdam Airport when Robert said he’d arrived at Amsterdam Airport, whoops!)
How fitting; the main radio station here is called Slam FM
